Ecopackers Hostel Cusco Peru
History of our Colonial House
Cusco is a place full of history, it is the birthplace of the Inca empire which later became a Spanish colony. We mention this because our backpacker hostel is located right in the center of the city of Cusco and for this reason our hostel for backpackers is rich in history.
Our colonial house is located on what was at the time of the Inca Empire, the "Temple of the Three Pumas" and was an important part of the Incan Empire due to its strategic location.
Once the Spanish colony had settled, the street where we are located was renamed the "Street of the Brigadier" because it was where the house of Don Antonio Picoaga was located, a well known Spanish brigadier and it was later again renamed after the church and convent of Santa Teresa, which is still located at the end of our street.
Restoring our Vintage House
Ecopackers Hostels assumed the task of restoring this vintage house, a part of Cusco´s history. It was for this reason and to have the Hostel with the best location in Cusco, the colonial house that we are now occupying was fully restored by our company. The house was in total neglect and so we started our restoration work in March of 2010. For 5 months we worked very hard along with building experts to achieve our objective, which was the total restoration of this gorgeous vintage house located only one block from the main square.
We carried out restoration work on the facade and interiors taking the smallest attention to detail in order to not lose any essence of its rich past. We repaired ceilings, changed floors, and had the staircases renewed. The balcony railings formerly used by the Spanish were also recovered as well as the roof that was repaired carefully considering that the mansion is more than 400 years old.
To solve moisture problems we completely repaired the roof and gutters as well as the sewage system, which is now also brand new. We also worked on the interior and exterior walls, which were fully repaired and then painted. We rebuilt all the woodwork and door frames maintaining its colonial style, so much so that when one stays at Ecopackers one can feel the air of the ancient inhabitants of Cuzco. This hostel for backpackers is full of history, full of tradition and we put all of this enigmatic past at the disposal of our guests.
