MACHUPICCHU, THE LOST CITY OF THE INCAS
A stunning and imposing citadel . At a distance of 120 km. (75 miles) from Cusco, in the valley of the Urubamba river, Machu Picchu rises to an altitude of 2,400 meters (7,900 ft.) above sea level. It lies within the spectacular structure provided by the exuberant vegetation of the nearby jungle, and the harsh landscape.
Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, one of the most celebrated examples of Inca architecture, is alleged to have been constructed in the mid-15th century by Inca Pachacutec. Lost in history, it was not discovered until 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham.

The Inca Trail will be closed in February for upkeep and maintenance work

From January 15 to March 31 will run the maintenance and conservation of the Inca trails leading to the citadel of Machu Picchu and, as usual, the access to these trails will be closed to visitors in February, said a regional authority.
"Everything is ready for the hard work of the maintenance of the trail, we have the equipment, tools and materials needed for this work," he said.
